A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Stage music – 2003)

This music, for a 13 piece orchestra, was commissioned and performed by the Northampton County Youth Theatre for two open-air productions of the Shakespeare play. It was performed - of course - over the midsummer weekend, in the splendid grounds of Grendon Hall. The orchestra was situated under a marquee in front of a grassy bank, where the main play was staged. Naturally, being the midsummer weekend in England, we had both bright sunshine, and torrential rain - at one point the terrified orchestra and cast were sheltering under the (metal-framed) tent during a brief but heavy thunderstorm, whilst the audience dashed into the main buildings for cover.

I have since produced an orchestral suite from the incidental music, featuring many of the themes from the original staging.

This clip features Simon Frost as Oberon, and Fiona Coles as Puck, accompanied by flute, harp and vibes
